The Directors

Please note that the Young Vic Directors Program is open to all directors at an early stage of their career. The only criteria for joining is that they consider themselves professional directors, are not in full time education and are resident in the UK. It is important that when using this list detailed references are taken up as presence on this list is not in itself a recommendation.

TRAINEE DIRECTOR at the Royal Court Theatre Sept 2011- 2012

Direction includes: AND I AND SILENCE (upcoming at Signature Theater, New York), The Macontent (Globe Theatre) And I And Silence, Northern Star, FACTS (Finborough Theatre), And I And Silence (Public Theatre in New York, rehearsed reading), The Red Set and Mahua (New Plays From India, Royal Court), Love, Love, Love (Mousson d'ete Festival, France), Slaughter City (RSC rehearsed reading), One Short Sleepe (South Bank Festival) The Lady's Not For Burning and Elephant's Graveyard (Warwick Arts Centre).

Assistant Direction includes, Haunted Child, In Basildon, Love, Love, Love and Love and Information (Royal Court), the upcoming Strange Interlude (National Theatre), Hamlet (Shakespeare's Globe) and The Talented Mr Ripley (Royal and Derngate Theatres, Northampton).

I'm keen to see and make theatre with a left bent. This doesn't mean 'Political' theatre because on hearing that, most run to the high hills. Instead, theatre that punches (or seeps) through boundaries - be these intimate, intellectual or visual. The most exciting moments in theatre come when we feel truly that anything could happen, the situation might very well depart from the text.

I'm interested in the people within the political and am continuously inspired by collaboration and artists who create new writing for theatre as well as reexamining the ol' classics.

    Carolyn Defrin - Photo
background: From writing, directing and performing, to teaching and facilitating, I work with several different kinds of artists to make new work.

My interdisciplinary aesthetics and ensemble driven ethics stem from an early career in Chicago where, as a founding company member of The House Theatre, I collaborated on numerous award-winning world premiere productions that mixed theatre, dance, music, and visual spectacle.

My current practice continues to mix media –from interactive and site specific work, to theatrical production, I'm particularly interested in the surreal and fragmentary nature of story and storytelling.

Present work includes writing/directing "The Balloon" (Battersea Arts Center, "Hack the Barbican", upcoming festivals at Chelsea Theatre and The Yard in Feb. 2014,) choreographing and performing "Study for a Shadow" (Central Saint Martins' Platform Theatre, June 2013), assisting Geraldine Pilgrim on "Handbag" and "Toynbee" (Feb. 2013, Dec. 2013), co-designing/directing "Runner" -an interactive site specific production in Port of Piraeus, Greece (May 2013). I recently participated in the NEM Summit Art/Tech Hackathon, where my team won one of Disney's 'pervasive gaming' prizes.

Additionally I regularly produce and write literature for children and families with my writing partner, John Francisco. (www.themonsterweekly.com)

And I have extensive teaching and facilitation experience--current projects include a collaboration with interior design artist, Soumya Basnet to redesign a community centre by and for teens facing violence in London.

    Cassandra Tomaz - Photo
background: Cassandra started her professional career as a dancer and choreographer with a strong emphasis on jazz, Latin and improvisation for actors. She produced, choreographed and
starred in various touring projects including the successful “Brazilian Fever” at Edinburgh Festival in 2007.
In 2004, Cassandra trained in acting and thereafter dedicated most of her time to pursuing a career as an actress. With a strong desire to push herself in new, interesting work and enabling more frequent work, Cassandra became a producer of various short and feature films with the up and coming writer, Ashley Holloway.
Most recently, Cassandra has produced and directed two play readings at The Arts Theatre: 'Playhouse Creatures' and a new play written for her to star as the lead,' Lesere'. Lesere is in development for a run at The Arts Theatre Nov 2013.
She is also producing and directing a new web series, Jamestown.

Cassandra’s directing approach stems from a unique understanding of the physicality of the actor, using various movement and dance techniques to enable actors to be more physically
present. She is also strongly influenced by the Meisner technique which is a driving force for all her work both as an actor and director.

  21. Catherine Johnson*
    Catherine Johnson - Photo
background: I studied English Literature and Theatre Studies at Leeds University, analysing the work of classic, contemporary and liminal artists and playwrights from Beckett and Pinter to Augusto Boal through to Romeo Castellucci, Pina Bausch and Vito Acconci. The degree also involved practical work at all stages, with students creating short pieces of theatre in response to academic questions or texts, set either by the course leaders or chosen by the students. The three years culminated in a practical dissertation in which I created a 'live gallery' of actors on plinths, and explored the relationship between reality and artifice in live arts.

Post-degree I trained in physical theatre and collaborative devising at the London International School of Performing Arts. This two year course was influenced heavily by the pedagogy of Jaques Lecoq, and the course involved the study of improvisation, animals, commedia dell'arte, bouffon, larval and neutral masks, the grotesque worlds, cabaret, epic storytelling, clown and greek and modern chorus, as well as complimentary classes in Feldenkrais, acrobatics and dynamic construction (a practical design course). Alongside these classes, each week students were set a practical project by the course leaders. We were given a theme and assigned a group with which to create a theatrical response to it. These responses were presented to the teachers and the rest of the class weekly for feedback and critique, and they formed an essential part of the training, giving students autonomy over their own creations, and constant practise at making original work.

**** WhatsOnStage- ‘Dynamic, inventive and charming...A production to feast upon.'

“Part spoken word, part play and delivered through microphones like stand-up, this two-hander glitters with promise and pep… two of the wittiest and most engaging performances I've seen this Fringe.’ - **** Alice Jones, The Independent

“A scorcher; a Disco Pigs for the pro-plus generation. Cheryl Gallacher’s direction, pared right back to the conventions of stand-up, smartly uses microphones to seed ideas of both performance and mediatisation.” - Matt Trueman

‘The growing on-stage chaos of Cheryl Gallacher’s production captures the trajectory of their epically messy night as microphone stands tumble to the ground.’ ****, Natasha Tripney, The Stage

background: My name is Chima Nsoedo. I'm a 26years old writer/director who started out directing/writing for film. For the past year, I have focused on directing for theatre and have been extremely lucky to do this at the Young Vic.

Two year ago I was offered a place on the Back Stage Pass course that got me up to speed with the technical requirements of a theatre play – from stage management to making decisions on lighting.

January last year, I was offered a place on the Introduction to Directing course, also at the Young Vic which enhanced my knowledge in directing from a more actor to director relationship point of view. Working on script subtext, communicating an action and blocking where three skills I have enhanced since the course.

Coupled with my technical knowledge from the Back Stage Pass course and my experience directing short films and documentaries, I am very aware of the different segments to directing and how to adapt to each one.

Shortly after, I won a position out of three slots to direct for the Young Vic’s top youth project, Joined Up Thinking. For three weeks I got the chance to choose a script, then select twenty minutes to direct and present it on the last week.

I am also working as an assistant director on a community project called Two Boroughs - ‘It’s all in the Script’. A once a week project that set to increase participation amongst the wider community. We work on scripts, devise games and intend to come up with a show at the end of the ten week run.

Currently I am re-writing and looking for actors to begin a new film project.

background: I have been directing devised and collaborative theatre for five years. I recently completed an MA in Movement Studies at Royal Central School of Speech & Drama and now teach movement and devised theatre. I have so far taught at Rose Bruford, the Brit School, RADA, Goldsmiths College and Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.

I also currently work as Co-Artistic Director for Page One Theatre.

Page One Theatre formed in 2012; a company of collaborators creating innovative theatre full of surprise and delight with a universal appeal. Combining movement and puppetry with both traditional and new technologies we create original and vibrant new stories for young audiences. The company collaborates with a wealth of other artists from varied backgrounds who join the team to produce ensemble theatre for young audiences; we have so far collaborated with an animator, illustrator, puppetry specialist and a computer game designer. We were recently asked to join Creative Youth as one of their Creative Talent companies for 2013/2014.

Before this, I studied Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmith University. Upon graduating I set up SKIPtheatre, creating work in clubs, streets, galleries, empty mansions and houses, shops, theatres, at fashion shows and music festivals, and in seaside villages. Play is at the centre of my work and I am interested in making performances where the space and audience are part of the story telling.

I worked as a Casting Assistant at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for two years from 2009-2011 and recently worked as Assistant Choreographer to Sian Williams for their 2012 season.

Recent work: The Misanthrope for the Nangyang Academy of Fine Art, Singapore.
Currently: Developing 2 new plays and a one-on-one piece.
Key achievements in the past 5 years include: Curator and Director The Only Way is Ethics festival, a commission from the Mercury Theatre Colchester to create a three week event of mixed media, including live performance, to explore the issue of ethics; co-director of The Lost Plays Revue and various rehearsed readings and Assistant Director whilst at Nottingham Playhouse; Assistant Director to Robin Herford on Intimate Exchanges again for The Mercury Theatre; Associate Director on Red Riding Hood, a restaging for Polka Children’s Theatre, London and a devised one woman show at The Drama Centre, London; French Fancies, a rural tour of Maupassant short stories and The Blue River, a new play about Bosnian refugees living in Manchester.
As an actor my work in small scale and rural touring taught me an essential understanding of audience and their integral involvement in the creative and performance process – they have to be central throughout. I am currently exploring ways to bridge the gap between audience and performance space further, making live work more accessible, less intimidating.

background: I trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Iworked as an actor for ten years, so I know what it's like on the other side! Not that I think there should be sides - I like collaborative working.

I have extensive experience working with young people through my work with the National Youth Theatre. I have been a course director on their summer intake acting course. I have directed & devised shows with the company.

This year was an exciting one as my fledgling company IF WE BUILD IT staged it's first workshopped production at the Old Vic Tunnels. i had the pleasure of working with a talented cast including Bryony Hannah, Sarah Tansey & Richard Hansell. On the personal front I have just become a mum, so I'm on unofficial maternity leave...freelancers don't get it. There are plans afoot for a studio production of Othello in the autumn

For the last two years I have worked on the Shakespeare Schools festival.

I also work as communication skills trainer and I'm involved with many corporate companies as well as public sector organisations such as the NHS. I believe the skills you need to be an effective coach are not dissimilar as those needed by a good director

Not much has happened on the directing front for me this year as I am a single parent to a two year old - a walking subject for Woman's Hour!

background: The work I have done as a director has been acclaimed in a long list of festivals around the world and has had theatre release in the UK. In London alone, each one of my productions, filmic or scenographic, has been enjoyed by tens of thousands of people. My interest lies where there is a strong text, not in any particular style or medium, to the point of even directing an animation piece and a viral for The Young Vic. At the moment, I am working, amongst other things, on western set in northern europe and an adaptation of "Epileptic", David B's graphic novel, both produced by Atopic.

I enjoy the collaborative creation of a piece and have worked on the boundaries of theatre over many years, shifting people’s emotions and conceptions using subtle dramatic devices and constructions, and I have a track record of success in terms of audience attendance and critique.

I have gained experience in theatre with Dominique Sarrazin (Theatre de la Decouverte - several plays) and Guy Alloucherie (Le Ballatum Theatre - "Si tu me quittes, est-ce que je peut venir aussi?") and have worked for several years in film and television as an art director / set designer where I had the opportunity to collaborate very closely with David Thacker on two BBC productions - "The Scold's Bridle" and "Miller Shorts".

I have also designed and directed several hugely successful shows at the Hayward Gallery, London - "Bruce Nauman", voted by Time Out readers as one of the most stunning exhibitions of the decade, "Sonic Boom" and "Eyes, Lies & Illusions".

I teach at University College London.

    Conrad Blakemore - Photo
background: I initially started my interest in theatre working as a production photographer and worked for The Stage between 1984 & 1989. In 1989 I went to Bournemouth Film School to pursue my aim to become a cinematographer. During this course I worked on numerous drama & documentary projects and ended up directing short docs that were broadcast on BBC & C4.
On leaving filmschool for some years I pursued the genre of documentary although maintaining an interest in drama in both cinema & live theatre.
In 2003 I was invited to direct a play at Pentameters thea. in Hampstead called the Lodger, a new work by Paul Birtill. This was followed by two other plays - Squalor & Happy Christmas by the same author. These plays were favourably reviewed and popular with audiences. They also gave me an enthusiasm to direct more theatre productions and work with new writers or undiscovered works. I have worked with writer Edward Bond as part of a season of his plays at the Cock Tavern (2010) directing his first play The Pope's Wedding. Recent (2012/13) productions include Trauma at the White Bear and two black comedies The Good Samaritan & Death of a Hawker by Paul Birtill at Hampstead's Pentameters. Currently working as tutor at City Lit college.
